TOUCH FOR HEALTH

Touch for Health is a practical guide to natural health using acupressure and touch to improve postural balance and reduce physical and mental pain and tension. When using Touch for Health, you can expect to have more vitality, bolster your immune system, improve stress tolerance, increase performance levels and endurance, and speed up recovery from illness and injuries.

Touch for Health was developed from a subfield of chiropractic called Applied Kinesiology (AK). The creator of AK, Dr. George Goodheart, discovered ways to balance the body's muscles and energy through various reflex techniques. In addition, he discovered that there was a direct relationship between the acupuncture energy and specific muscles.

Dr. John F. Thie, who worked with Dr. Goodheart, saw the potential for presenting these powerful, yet basically simple skills in a way that could be understood and utilized by everyone. His system of natural health care through touch integrates principles from acupuncture with Western methods. Thus, he designed a holistic system with the lay person in mind, using simple techniques to balance the body's energies to release pain and enhance the body's natural healing ability. John called it Touch for Health (TFH). "I wanted people to understand there is always hope -- no matter what their age or physical condition," Dr. Thie said. "Chiropractic, kinesiology, nutrition, acupressure -- all the things I'd studied and practiced -- could be synthesized into practical techniques people would use with themselves and their loved ones at home. All that is needed is a pair of loving hands."

These procedures, described in the 1973 book Touch for Health, are complementary to other health interventions and may be all that is needed to help restore the body's natural recuperative functions. No matter what the person's symptoms are, TFH techniques balance the body's energies and strengthen any weak muscles found, which also improves posture.

Certain muscles are related to a specific organ system because they share an acupuncture ~;" meridian relationship. Improving the muscle by restoring its energy flow also gives relief II to the organ, which shares that system, but TFH is not treating the organ as such, nor the disease or the symptom. It is helping the whole person by integrating many different systems and functions. The body itself performs the healing process, facilitated by proper balancing. Even without understanding precisely how this process works, it is clear that by balancing the energy flow and posture, we position the body in the best possible state from which to heal itself
